We are circulating this job vacancy on behalf of Academic and Peer Support Services at Deakin University and encourage you to pass it on to any colleagues you think might be interested.
The Students Helping Students Hub at Deakin University is an umbrella Community of Practice for all peer support programs across all campuses and in all faculties. We provide training for mentors and student leaders in programs that may have an academic, social or practical focus. These include the unit specific Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) program , the Writing Mentors Drop In Station, several Faculty- based peer mentoring programs and the Library Rovers.
We are about to pilot a Maths Mentors program as it is widely acknowledged that students in many disciplines (eg. Primary Education, Psychology, Sociology, Engineering) need extra support to achieve highly, or simply to achieve. We know that students benefit from a collaborative, student-centred approach where leaders are trained to ask the questions rather than provide all the answers. They listen, they encourage, but they avoid teaching. We have evidence that this approach has worked well for thousands of students at Deakin and has contributed to increased success, retention and engagement rates.
The Maths Mentors program, we believe, requires the presence of a Maths expert or professional, who can support the student leaders and coordinate the program which will be run as a Drop In station in our Learning Centre in Burwood. As the program grows we will match the mentor with the participants’/mentees’ units of study but for the initial stage at least the skills covered will vary and be ‘generic’. Students from a few units in the Faculty of Business and Law will be targeted for the pilot but the program will be available to all.
We are looking for a Maths teacher who has taught Specialist Maths (or equivalent) and who can provide the answers to the questions the student leaders may not be able to provide, who can guide and coach the mentors and offer extra help to some mentees. The person we are seeking knows the value of eliciting and of scaffolding and is willing to be trained to advise in a manner that minimises “teacher talk” and maximises opportunities for mentees to make discoveries for themselves and to take control of their own learning.
We want to appoint a teacher (or retired teacher) for three days per week on a casual basis @HEW level 7 to help us create and coordinate the program. We know that the program will expand and we should be able to offer it to other campuses at Geelong and Warrnambool and on line for our Cloud students by the end of the year.
