Abstract: Unmotivated students? Empty consultation hours? Low student participation? A first year classroom can be very unforgiving, even for experienced lecturers. During my time teaching as a graduate student, I explicitly targeted these issues via the use of several alternative teaching methods. Two techniques of particular interest are a LaTeX typesetting requirement for assignment submissions and the use of an online forum for students to promote student interaction. In this seminar, I will present my implementation of these techniques through a sample of the materials from the course.
