FYiMaths Annual Workshop

We are looking forward to the next FYiMaths workshop!

When: 28th – 29th June
Where: The University of Melbourne

This year’s workshop will be focus on ‘Assessment for sustainable learning‘.

Some questions we might like to consider are

  • How can we improve assessment practices for time-poor educators?
  • How can assessment improve student life-long learning?
  • How can we use assessment to inform teaching practice?
  • Can technology help both students and educators with assessment?
  • How do we know what students are actually learning?

Interested in Presenting?

We’d love to hear about the interesting work you are doing  in your classes.
We are welcoming abstracts from participants who would like to present. Preference will be given to presentations centred around our theme of assessment, but others will be accepted if time allows in the programme.

If you would like to present, please submit your abstract by Friday 25th May, to

We will open a registration page on Eventbrite shortly.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

FYiMaths Annual Workshop

A reminder that the deadline for abstract submissions has now passed, but we would like more presentations.

If you are intending to present at the workshop, can you please email the title of your talk to me directly

by COB Friday 23 June so that I can prepare the program.

It would also be really helpful if you could register your attendance too so that we can finalise arrangements.

The workshop will be held in

Melbourne on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th July 2017.

It is a good time for us to discuss our impressions of the latest STEM education recommendations that have just been announced and how we might respond to them.

If you have not yet seen the STEM recommendations that came out earlier today, you can find them at

I hope to see many of you in July.

FYiMaths Annual Workshop 2017

We are happy to announce that the 5th FYiMaths Annual Workshop will be held in Melbourne on

Thursday 13th and Friday 14th July 2017.

We have decided that this year we will not have a particular theme, and we invite you to submit an abstract on any issue that may be of interest to the group (for example, preparation of students, mathematics support, the Australian curriculum, problem-based learning, graduate skills development in mathematics, extending the high achievers).

I am particularly interested in hearing from those who feel that the FYiMaths network has helped them in their teaching practice or professional development. Tell us your story!

If you do have a particular interest or suggestion for a themed session, please do let me know.

The program will be available in due course, but for now to help with your travel arrangements, we will start at 10am each day (to allow for those of you travelling) and will finish at 3pm on the Friday.

Please send your abstracts to

by 13 June 2017.

I’m really looking forward to seeing you all in July.

July Workshop 11-12 July

Dear FYiMaths colleagues

It has been a busy start to the year – apologies for the long delay in the announcement of our annual workshop.

But to reward you for your patience, I can announce that, this year we will have not 1, but  2 workshops!

The first, our annual meeting, is a little later than normal, due to the loss of the wonderful Jo Cattlin.

At our 2015 workshop, there was strong interest expressed for a SOTL workshop.  So in 2016 we will run a two day event, on the 11th and 12th July.

The 11th will be dedicated to your contributed talks, the 12th will be a SOTL workshop that will be well worth attending.

Professor Tina Overton (Monash University) will be leading a SOTL workshop for us.  Tina gave a fabulous workshop at ACSME in 2015, and I can guarantee that we will all learn a great deal from her.   I will make space available to members after the workshop so you can continue to develop and work  on your ideas.

So let’s get going, please submit your abstracts to Nikki by June 30, 2016. We will arrange the schedule quickly after that.

I will set up an EventBrite registration page shortly.

Please keep early November on your radar and free in your diary.  AT ACSME 2015 there was enthusiasm for a mathematics problem-based learning workshop.  With the support of the ACDS, we will be bringing this to you and I’m really keen to hear from you if you have case studies to contribute.

Stay tuned!
