Title: The Mathematics of Evolution Within Species
Speaker: Professor Robert Griffiths
Date: Monday 16 September 2019
Time: 6-7pm (Light refreshments from 5:30pm)
Venue: Monash Conference Centre, Level 7, 30 Collins Street Melbourne Vic 3000
Understanding the process of evolution within species is a fundamental topic in biology, but also in mathematics.
By studying and utilising the random nature of how gene frequencies change over time, mathematics has made significant contributions to our understanding of within species evolution. Moreover, these studies have motivated deep results in mathematics itself, for example in quantifying properties of random permutations.
This talk will give a non-technical overview of the two-way interaction between mathematics and population genetics.
This talk is targeted at a general audience, including high school students. No mathematical knowledge is required.
Refreshments will be provided 30 minutes before the presentation.

About the speaker:
Professor Robert Griffiths is currently Emeritus Professor at Oxford University and Adjunct Professor at Monash University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, and has made significant contributions to mathematical population genetics, including in diffusion processes and ancestral inference.

This symposium will bring together key thinkers and scholars who have applied the capability theory (Sen 1992, 1993) and capital theory (Bourdieu, 1986, 1993) across disciplines to consider how this framing may assist us to reconceptualise student persistence.
We know little about how learners draw on ‘internal capabilities’ (Nussbaum, 2011) when persisting in university; these capabilities are not innate but develop in interaction with the individual’s environment (social, cultural, familial and political). To contribute alternative perspectives on the issue of student participation and retention, this symposium deliberately shifts attention away from deficit views of student cohorts and instead utilises the Capability Approach and Capital Theories to understand the ways in which students successfully navigate higher education and reach graduation.
Held over two days (21 and 22 November, 2019), this symposium will be of interest to HE researchers/scholars, equity/widening participation stakeholders, academic staff, policy makers, not-for profit/community organisations.

This three day international research conference focuses on the journey schools and teachers make as they reimagine and redevelop their learning spaces.
In Australia and many other countries, school design is being transformed with new flexible, innovative learning environments. Research is showing innovative learning environments are not a magic cure, but evidence is mounting that they constitute a powerful tool that – if used well – improves student educational experiences. We can now say schools (and teachers) navigate a transformative journey as they re-imagine their learning spaces.
What is involved in making the journey from traditional to innovative learning environments? What is the latest research telling us about how teachers can be supported on this journey?
The program will feature research presentations by graduate and early career researchers, educators and designers along with workshops, discussions and school tours. This event aims to connect research with practice and is ideal for teachers, school leaders, architects and policy makers involved in designing or refurbishing schools or developing teaching practices that use space to support innovative learning.
