The successful appointee will work on an Australian Research Council funded Discovery Project in Algebraic Combinatorics led by Ole Warnaar (UQ) and Eric Rains (Caltech). The project concerns questions and open problems in Macdonald polynomial theory and allied areas of algebraic geometry, combinatorics and representation theory.

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer @ CARM, UQ, Brisbane

The Centre for Applications in Natural Resource Mathematics (CARM) is a School Centre in the School of Mathematics and Physics at The University of Queensland. The Centre is co-funded by UQ and the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF). The Centre focuses on the development and application of mathematical and statistical theory and tools that will provide outcomes in the management of fisheries, water security, and conservation. The successful appointee will provide teaching and research support to CARM. In the research domain, the person will develop quantitative theory, tools and models for management of natural resources. This includes frequent publication in high-quality journals, participation in and organizing of conferences, international and interdisciplinary collaboration, and attracting competitive research funding. The appointee will also be expected to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Natural Resource Mathematics program and other programs, where required. Other teaching duties include postgraduate supervision and curriculum development.

Teaching and Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow in Statistics @ IMB, UQ, Brisbane

This position is a Teaching and Research Position.  The Teaching component for this position is less than that of a typical Teaching and Research Academic but is still a crucial component.  The appointee will be the course coordinator for a new semester-long course, “Statistics in Genetics” and will cover topics such as Best Linear Unbiased Prediction, REML, association mapping. The appointee will be able to choose the focus of the research component of role but will be based either at IMB or QAAFI.

This primary purpose of this position is to conduct research into advanced Monte Carlo methods, including splitting, importance sampling, spatial processes and rare-event simulation. This position also works with colleagues in the development of joint research projects.

The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) is a leading global life sciences research institute committed to improving quality of life through research. IMB was established in 2000 as UQ’s first research institute and is the cornerstone of one of the largest bioscience research precincts in Australia.

The Role

The successful appointee/s (one to two positions) will work with data dumps from Medicare and from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme to extract, analyse and interpret the data. Our focus is primarily psychiatric disorders, in particular comorbidities, drug use and longitudinal trajectories.

Level A postdoctoral staff will be required to work with lead researchers on existing projects, whilst level B postdoctoral staff will be expected to develop and run their own research program in collaboration with members of the Program.

21 – 23 Nov 2016: Forum Mathematics-for-Industry @ QUT

The Asia Pacific Consortium of Mathematics for Industry invites you to participate in the 2016 Forum Mathematics-for-Industry (FMfI) at Queensland University of Technology, November 21-23, 2016. This will be the first meeting of FMfI outside of Japan. The purpose of the meeting is to highlight the relationship between mathematics and industry, and the focus of the event is on Biology, Agriculture and Environment. This event will provide students and academics from Japan, New Zealand, Australia and other international locations an opportunity to exchange ideas about the use of mathematics for industrial applications.  Student registration is free provided that the student makes a poster presentation.  For a limited number of eligible Australian students who are unable to secure financial support from their home institution, partial financial support provided by AMSI may be available through the organisers by contacting Professor Ian Turner (i.turner@qut.edu.au). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Data Science (SMP) @ UQ, Brisbane

The successful appointees will be expected to engage in postgraduate teaching and curriculum development in the School’s new Master of Data Science Program which is being offered in 2017, in conjunction with the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The positions will also teach statistics and mathematics courses more broadly, including service courses. The appointees are required to undertake an active role in the research efforts of the School. This includes frequent publication in high-quality journals, international and interdisciplinary collaboration, and attracting competitive research funding. The positions will supervise postgraduate and honours students, conduct high-quality research and perform administrative, outreach and other activities associated with the School, with a particular emphasis on the Master of Data Science program.
